Information on Changes to Alberta’s Auto Insurance.
I am sure you have all heard about “Care-First” which is the new auto insurance model for Alberta auto Insurance.
Effective January 1,2027 these changes will come into effect
Care-First is not “NO Fault Insurance” The difference is in certain circumstances the injured party will still be able to sue the at fault driver.
Injured drivers will work with their own Insurer for their care and recovery but fault will still be assigned appropriately and that “at fault” collision and any convictions will still be recorded on drivers records.
Insurance companies will continue to factor at fault collisions and any convictions into premiums.
The gov’t has advised that in the past an injured party could claim up to 600.00 per week in income replacement and that Care-First will increase that amount.
Also if you are responsible for the collision coverage for your own injuries was limited to 50,000 for the two years following the accident. Under Care-First all injured motorists would have access to much expanded Care-First benefits.
On the subject of premiums it is intended to improve affordability and also stability within our auto insurance system here in Alberta, but remember types of vehicles and driving records and claims experience will still factor in as well.
